The article “do you love what you do?” by Marshall Goldsmith was a very short article but it looks at two people and how their jobs affect them. The first person the author writes about is Warren Bennis. Bennis is a professor and founding chairman of the leadership institute at the University of Southern California and a visiting professor at Harvard business school and Harvard Kennedy School and an author who has sold over a million copies of his books.  Marshal Goldsmith tells us about a time when Professor Bennis was giving a lecture on leadership and started to ponder all the his own journey and someone asked him “do you love what you do?” Professor Bennis replied” I don’t know”.  Mr. Goldsmith then goes into looking at how the work week has changed. Back in the eighties professionals worked a forty hour week and had four weeks of vacation and now professional work 60 to 80 hours a week they have cell phones pda’s and emails and are always in contact. Mr. Goldsmith say if you don’t love what you do this could make for a professional hell. Mr. Goldsmith also goes on to say” life is to short it’s not worth it. In the new world we don’t have to love everything that we do, but we need happiness and meaning in most of our professional work. The second person Mr. Goldsmith talked about was Vicky. Vicky was a coaching client who was “very creative and entrepreneurial”. Vicky took a job with a conservative company who want someone that could shake things up and when she started to shake things u p the company decided that was not what they wanted. This job become frustrating for her and was affecting her life she decided to leave.  When Vicky asked herself if she loved what she did the answer was no and she made the change.

I think that Marshall Goldsmith wrote a great article on 2 people and how their work affects them. In Mr. Goldsmith article Do You Love What You Do he showed how two people worked their lives to get to prominent position only to realize they weren’t really sure it was what they wanted.  The first person Mr. Goldsmith wrote about was Mr. Bennis who couldn’t even say if he loved what he did even though he worked long and hard to get there. The second person who was written about was Vicky. Vicky was hired to help shake things up at a large conservative company. This was not a good fit for her or the company and it put tremendous stress on her. I think Mr. Goldsmith shows how people start working to advance their career but may not enjoy what they do.

The article goes into great detail about the strategies and the benefits of having happy workers and the way companies are trying to insure their employee’s happiness.

My Response

I think this was a very informative article on how companies look at increasing employee satisfaction. It has a lot of very useful information that I will use to help better understand my workers concerns. The article covered several ways that companies are working to increase their employee’s satisfaction but it does not look at how some workers may be unsatisfied with what they do. A company can give flexible schedules, free lunches and gifts but if the worker does not like the type of work he will never be satisfied. A company can do all the surveys it wants if the employee hates customer service they will always find something to complain about. It is a great that some companies will spend the money it take to increase their workers satisfaction. I am sure the employee who enjoys their work is very happy with the way the company treats them but there are always the ones who will never be satisfied. Some workers no matter what you give them will always be unhappy. Companies that invest their money in employee satisfaction are a great thing. I have always thought that corporations are corrupt and only look at their bottom line number and worry very little about the employee. It is nice to see that some companies worry about and respect the workers enough to implement such policies. I also think that companies that go to the extremes of putting employee satisfaction in their business plans and have committees that meet to discuss employee happiness are rare and this is not the way the majority of companies treat their employees’.

Why They Kill Their Newborns
By Steven Pinker
I n his article Steven Pinker shows how scholars can argue that it’s ingrained in human nature to kill a newborn baby. He cites other professors and the history of human evolution to support this. At no time in the article does Steven Pinker take a stance in what he actual believes but he shows no evidence to contradict these ideas. I believe Steven Pinker shows an abundance of support in how these actions could ingrained to our human psyche.   A Modest Proposal: Should We Change Our Minds About Infanticide?

By: Bruce Chapman
Seattle P-I
October 21, 1997 In this article Bruce Chapman does not use much fact to support his argument but gives more of his opinions. I believe he sees Pinkers’ article as a way to promote the killing of newborns or at least justify them. He writes with more emotion questioning each piece of research that pinker put in his article.  My Summary I think that Steven Pinker writes a very good article about how murdering your newborn child could be a normal part of nature. He uses a lot of reference to support that claim. He never comes out and states his opinion but he does not show anything to dispute his facts. Bruce Chapman writes a very emotional article he takes everything in pinker article as if he said it himself. I like Chapman more because it feels more personal and it is more his opinion then someone elses.

People who enjoy their work I believe have a much happier life

January 30, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I believe people who enjoy their work have a much happier life. Stress and anxiety can lead to countless other symptoms from heart disease to going bald.  It can also affect your personality. When I worked a less stressful job I had more time to spend with my family.   I was home two hours earlier every day, and I was hourly instead of salary so I got paid for my overtime. I do get satisfaction from doing my current job.   I get to help people everyday change and improve the quality of their life. I find my friends jobs.   I help them to provide health insurance for themselves and their family and plan for their retirement. There are times when I miss working with my tools.  I miss the free time I used to have and the ability to turn it all off at the end of the day. For the most part I get a lot of satisfaction from my job.  There is stress but it’s something I can live with.

1. I believe

January 22, 2008 · Leave a Comment

  1. I believe that people are followers.
  2. I believe that society is heavily influenced by media.
  3. I believe that government is controlled by big business.
  4. I believe that justice does not exist in the United States.
  5. I believe that knowledge can be gained through life experiences and not from college alone.
  6. I believe that science changes our world every day.
  7. I believe that reality is something the government and the media try to create to fool the viewers.
  8. I believe that life begins at conception.
  9. I believe that happiness is loving what you have.
  10. I believe that goodness is something most people do not express enough.
  11. I believe that death is a mystery.
  12. I believe that God is the same for all religions’ just with different names.

I believe knowledge can be gained from life experiences and not from college alone. I have worked for thirteen years with no college education and earn more then most. I learned a skilled trade that has helped me learn math, planning skills, how to manage other people, do paperwork and write reports. I believe that an education is important but it is not the most important thing. How many people get a college education but know nothing about current events they never read a newspaper or read a magazine with actual current events in it. I think learning math and science is important but real life experience gives you a better learning tool. Seeing it in a book is nice but until you do it you just don’t get that experience. I would hire someone with five years of practical experience then someone fresh from collage any day.
